Free Profit Calculator

Our Profit Calculator instantly works out profit, profit margin, and markup from your cost and selling price — completely free, right in your browser. Switch between four modes: calculate margin and markup from prices you already know, work backward to find the selling price you need for a target margin or markup, or calculate total profit across a batch of units sold.

Margin vs Markup — What's the Difference?

These two terms get confused constantly, but they measure profit against two different bases:

TermFormulaMeasures profit as a % of...
Profit MarginProfit ÷ Selling PriceWhat you sold it for
MarkupProfit ÷ Cost PriceWhat it cost you

For example, if something costs $80 and sells for $100, your profit is $20. That's a 20% margin (20 ÷ 100) but a 25% markup (20 ÷ 80). The two numbers are always different unless your cost is $0 — mixing them up is one of the most common pricing mistakes small businesses make.

How to Calculate the Selling Price You Need

If you know your cost and want a specific profit margin, don't just add the margin percentage to your cost — that actually gives you a smaller margin than you intended, because margin is based on the selling price, not the cost. Use the formula Selling Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin%) instead. The "Price from Margin" and "Price from Markup" tabs above handle this calculation for you automatically.

Why Bulk Profit Matters

Knowing your profit on a single unit is useful, but knowing your total profit across everything you sold in a month tells you whether your business is actually working. The "Bulk Profit" tab multiplies your per-unit numbers by quantity sold, so you can quickly see total cost, total revenue, and total profit for a batch, a production run, or a sales period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Profit Calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up required. Calculate as many scenarios as you need.

Why is my markup always higher than my margin?

As long as you're making a profit, markup will always be a larger percentage than margin, because markup is calculated against the smaller number (cost) while margin is calculated against the larger number (selling price).

Can a profit margin be 100% or more?

No, profit margin mathematically approaches but never reaches 100% (that would mean the item cost nothing). Markup, on the other hand, has no upper limit.

Does this calculator account for taxes or overhead costs?

No, it calculates gross profit from cost and selling price only. For a full tax picture, use our Tax Calculators alongside this tool.
